He lived in Indianapolis six years in the 1930's, attending Cathedral Grade School and Shortridge High School. — Maybe the fact that he delivered The Times for a couple of years clinches the claim, though he’s quick to admit his junior vaudeville experience helped start him on the road to. show business. ;
Start of local Intetlude THE INDIANAPOLIS interlude came when his fathér, the late Karl Sauvain, moved the family from Earl's native town of Cleveland to take over managership of a shoe store on the Circle. Earl Jr. subsequently took the name of William for stage use. Broadway aspirations were still far ahead when young éEarl was paper-boy, baseballer, bowler and winner of “walkathon” and “wobblewalk” contests here. First place in a wobblewalk (sho*t planks with rubber mats strapped to shoes for comic effect) contest on the Lyric stage woh him nét only a prize, but also a kiss from the leading lady of the then current vaudeville bill. “I don't remember her name, but I was old enough to know she was darn good-looking,” he says. Back in Cleveland after the Indianapolis years, he went in seriously for operetta. and church singing in his senior year at Cleveland Heights
