A woel fable setting for a warm sar evening is all green and white. Libbey s emerald glassware and td innerware against a white cloth, with a centerpiece of white flowers and green floated in a bowl, perk up heat-wilted appetites. Low 9-ounce tumblers, just introduced in the emerald

Congratulations? - ® By JOAN + WHEN friends or relatives | get engaged, it's suave to felicitate them. Do- you know the | proper form? Briefly this is it: You never | congratulate a girl on her en-
gagement. You simply wish | aol LG!
her happiness. The man is the one to be congratulated. It may seem silly but there it is. Giving Susie congratulations stamps you as a know- | nothing. The correct gambit is | to say, “I hope you'll be very happy!” or “I wish you all kinds of happiness.” With an intimate pal, you can let yourself go with ‘a heartfelt exclamation: “How thrilling!” But don’t be too gushing—or too astonished.
RB. 8.8
THE POINT is that the man |
is supposed to be the pursuer. Congratulating a girl or showing undue astonishmemt implies
that she’s been chasing her hero. (Even if it's true it's rude to say so.)
The formal way to felicitate. |
engaged couples is in writing.

to the girl for politeness’ sake. Phoning congratulations good wishes is poor techsigue. If you're in a hurry, and speak your piece. wise write. And a word to the engaged couple, Notes of congratulation or good wishes require an im‘mediate reply.

Times Garden Editor Q-—We don’t have room for much
garden but we do buy a few roses, Usually I get the America Award winners because. they've been tested all over the country and I feel pretty sure they'll do well in this climate. But this yéars I bought a new rose (not an award winner) and now find that whil~ it has beautiful buds they open up, then turn brown around the] edges of the petals.-Is this the
riety fault. If the whole bud is eventually affected, suspect thrips damage. Try taking some buds indoors, notice whether the full blown rose still browns in shade. If not, it's probably] caused by the sun and you | might do what many rose spec-| falists in hot climates do,—| provide some kind of mid-day! shade. If you have no shade in| the yard, a few tall flowers, possibly delphiniums, in the rose ‘bed might help.
