Giving Washingfon Tourists Big Thrill |
William Ainsworth, of Wichita, Kas., Talks and Acts Like the President
Cipro ee By ELISE MORROW 3 ~ WASHINGTON, Apr. 20—The Republican Truman was in Wahsington this week, going to parties, sitting in Lafayette Square, and impressing the tourists. This gentleman, who bears a spectacularly close likeness to the President, is a profoundly Republican oil man from Wi- | named William L. Ainsworth.

lican pleasure in his reflected glory and, probably unconsciously, has assumed many presidential mannerisms. He is pink cheeked, jolly and reassuring, and he cocks and tilts his head and sets his jaw firmly—just like Mr. Tru- © man in the newsreels. : : Mr. Ainsworth's first major social i appearance in Washington was at a reception given at the Statler by the handsome Senator from Kansas, Harry Darby, and Mrs. Darby. Half a dozen of the other guests, including an admiral, approached him and asked him if he realized he looked exactly like Truman. The President's double came here originally with his wife, a retiring Kansas state regent of the DAR-for the DAR convention. “She’s one of those revolutionary WACs,” he said—but he stayed on for business and loafing.
fen. Andrews Schoeppel of Kansas told Mr. Ainsworth he should get a bodyguard, but so far there have been no unpleasant episodes, except one in Lafayette Square, across from the White
House, Mr. Ainsworth was reading his paper and taking the sun on a park bench when a ragged and tattered man— obviously a Republican-—sat down across from him and glowered darkly. Mr. Ainsworth moved, the man followed him, still glowering, so the poor man's Truman finally retreated to his hotel.
Irish Patriot The other character stirring up Washington this week is an adventurous and fetching Irish patriot named Gen. Eric Dorman O'Gowan. Gen. O'Gowan is 4 retired British army brigadier general with a British accent and a monocle, but without matehing political convie-
tions, He is doubtless the only British general ever to lead a battalion of the Irish Republean army, as he did in New York several weeks ago. Gen. O'Gowan fought with

+ Bradley, and Gen. and
Basil Brooke, prime minister of the six counties of Northern Ireland, who is touring the country in the opposing cause of - continued partition, If this serious question is to be decided on a social level, or on a basis of charm, Gen. O'Gowan is the worst thing ever to happen to the British empire, and Britain might as well fold up in Ireland immediately.

Among those who have given or are giving parties for Madame Minister are the Vice President and Mrs. Barkley, the Associate Supreme Court Justice and Mrs. Tom Clark, the Secretary of the Senate and Mrs, Leslie Biffle, the Belgian Ambassador, the Luxembourg Minister, the retiring Undersecretary of Commerce and Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, Gen. and Mrs. Omar Mrs.
