Of Squatters

Will Leave 3000 Families on Colombian

Lease to Government By ERNIE HILL

Times Special Writer NEW YORK, Apr. 28 — Three thousand squatter families have moved onto the properties of the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey In Colombia. Getting them off is a business no one wants to tackle. They have built shack towns. and hooked onto the company's gas lines. They hop rides on its trains, steal its equipment and even have organized a committee to complain about “squatting” conditions, Being. a-foreign.-company,.Trop-Jeal Oil Co. (Standard's subsidiary) is powerless to do anything but grin and bear it. Past experience with labor troubles and government regulations have convinced the company that any move it makes will bring a re newed cry of “Yankee imperial ism” in South America.

Americans Leaving But the American officials are secretly laughing up their sleeves They are pulling out of Colorabia in August of 1951 when a 30-year concession expires and will leave the problems with that country. Standard decided to evacuate after Colombia passed laws re quiring foreign companies to be 51 per cent Colombian owned stacked with Colombian officials

The company said, thanks very much, but no, A group of Colombian manufacturers will take over the De Mares field with 55 per cent ownership. They will operate it In collaboration with the govern ment which will own 45 per cent

Up to Government Tropleal-ham decided to-let-them deal with the moved on when the rumor was circulated that everything on the concession would be “grabbed by Colombians” when the Americans left. They took that literally and plan to grab houses, equipment, ‘ears and everything removable, S06 the manufacturers have left it to the government to deal with this problem. They will take over only after the squatters are removed. The government {is afraid to start to work, Standard's field is producing about 31,000 barrels of nil daily and declining. The field needs a modern refinery and repressuring. For a time, Tropical made plans to carry on but then too much red tape was introduced. Standard is trying only to stay |
