“HOW DO THESE EARNINGS LOOK TO YOU?

The real test of telephone wages is how they compare with those paid by other concerns in the same communities for work requiring similar skills and experience. Recent studies show that the telephone company employees’ average earnings are in the top bracket of all industries. Here are average weekly earnings of Indiana Bell people sma ssp ees inal communities, targe and small; in which we-operate.-

Average Weekly Earnings

“Top Rate” Maintenance, Installation and Construction Employees ..... $89.58

Employees in these crafts with five yeors' service average $73.38 a week; with one year's service, $47.92 a week. These earnings include pay for overtime, and extra pay for holiday, Sunday and night work.

Rates kag Far Behind Wage Increases

The rates you pay for telephone service are related, of course, to the cost of providing the service—and "wages make up, by far the greater part of the cost. Present Indiana Bell rates are far from catching up with wage increases. During the last 10 years, general wage increases have in- . creased our expenses $12,000,000 on an annual basis, This is three times the yearly increase in revenue received from the one moderate ‘rate increase during the same period. Because you pay the wage hill, you have a right to expect that wage rates be kept at a fair and reasonable level. To grant an unwarranted wage increase would not be consistent with our obligation

to the public to furnish the best possible service at the lowest

possible cost. +2 Ri ?
