Sees New System
By EMMA RIVERS MILNER Times Church Editer
The new International Chris-| >
tian University of Japan will help build a completely new education-’
al system in the islands.
Dr. Ralph E. Diffendorfer of New York, who has given 25 years of his life to Christian work | overseas, made this point clear, yesterday. Dr. Diffendorfer, executive director for the Internation- | al Christian University of Japan | Foundation, spoke yesterday aft-, last night in the,
ernoon and Second Presbyterian Church. He| __made an educational survey im "Japan as recently as last summe Dr. Diffendorfer explained th before World War II, Japanese! schools were those in Germany.. The
were given highly training in one field beginning in grammar school.
Things Changed Now
“This made the Germans a ready prey to Hitler: Propaganda and the Japanese the imperialistic teaching of a military group in their country. “Now all that is changed,” he continued. “The Japanese have gained a new viewpoint. The people think the state universities cultivated the imperialism that brought on the war and reduced them to their present sad condition. “Thus the new International Christian University of Japan is envisioned as a center for reconstructing the whole life of the nation.’ n - ”. The guest speaker is here in the interest of a campaign for $65,000 in Indianapolis for the University.” The sum raised here will go toward a fund of $10 million: : Aged in the U nited * Mrs. R. Episcopal “church worker and sponsor. of civic welfare, and Walter Leckrone. editor of The Indianapolfs Times, are co-chair-men. : |

who will think for themselves, democratically,” Dr. Diffendorfer sald.
“The new university is planned to meet these needs. It wili include a graduate school of education for teacher training, one of citizenship, of social work and later librarianship. The univer&ity will include a liberal arts college to serve as a model for un-! dergraduate work and as a laboratory for: college. teachers in! the making. The liberal arts’ college will comply with present Japanese law which requires the maintenance of such a school in connection with a post graduate university. When asked if the various Christian denominations which support colleges in Japan will not consider the new university a rival Institution, Dr. Diffendor~fer- gave -a-prompt reply. He said! various major denominations in the United States already have) contributed to the univ ersity fund citing this as an indication of approval.
