FIND CRAWFISH CASTLES ALONG A CREER

DROP A PEBBLE —\a/ AUSTEN FOR SPLASH ©

CASTLE OR MUD CRIVINEY Ty

During my boyhood I always called crawfish “crawdads,” but the recommended name is crayfish. Since it is really not a fish any. way, anyone of these names will serve. Very few boys grow up without having at least one experience at catching “‘crawdads,” and many girls are quicker and better at it than boys. These crawfish are abundant in many parts of North America and Europe. Even though they are plentiful, many adults never have known what the little clay chimneys were when they passed them while walking over low lands or along streams. ?

These “castles” are built up by the crayfish as they dig their 1long burrows away from ponds and streams. The “crayfish chime

neys” are built like tiny wells extending from the level underground room up to the surface. As the crayfish dig out the sand or mud it is piled around the opening, sometimes eight or more inches high, making a chimney-like castle. “ Try dropping a pebble down “well” until it hits water. I know. that these wells are from three to six feet deep here on our farm. Tie a string onto a rock, and let me know how deep you find them around your home.—TOMORROW—Static Magic With a Balloon.
