American Provincial (center) fits in period setting. : } By JEAN TABBERT THE SPOTLIGHT -of fashion is focused on the floor. It's shining on floor coverings, illuminating a host of new fabrics, patterns and colors to be unveiled beginning tomorrow in local stores. The unveiling will herald the Carpet Fashion Opening, an event being observed in hundreds of cities and towns all over the nation. The opening starts tomorrow and lasts through Apr. 27. High style designs rank first in the fashion parade. They're the patterns that eventually will be adopted by lower cost lines if they're approved by the consumer. One of the most dramatic of these ‘Predictor.” Manufactured by Archibaid Holmes and Sons, the carpet is made in two levels of looped pile with a self tone design. Its thin tapering horizontal and vertical lines give the effect of shadows cast by a bamboo lattice. The design won for talented Mr. McCobb, well-known furniture designer, an award by the Museum of Modern Art. It was one of the year's outstanding examples .of good design.
High Style Colors
The carpet comes in high style shades—pine green, moss green, gray, beige, rose red and copper red. Medium $11 a square yard price belies its fashion importance. .(Adams.) Reflecting the interest in casual style homes is James Lees and Co.'s “Ranch House Modern.” The floor covering has an intriguing checkered effect, subtly implied by stripes in short, vel-

looped twist pile running the opposite direction. . The style would -be-equally-at-home in modern-@r provincial interiors. It combines rich tones of ruby red, tropic green, mist green, sungold, henna, burgundy, tropic tan and crayon blue. The price is fitted neatly to-the-budgets of -the-young married set —$5.95 a square yard. (Ayres’.) A significant trend in carpeting is represented by Firth's “Castella,” a carved broadloom. Also in the popular price range, it’s made of part vinyl and part woolen yarn. An outstanding development in carpet construction, vinyl yarn strengthens the carved broadloom, replaces expensive and hard-to-get wool. “Castella” is available either in a leaf and vine or scroll design. At Banner-Whitehill's ($9.95).
. . Co-ordination Program Carpet co-ordination with fabrics has been limping along for several years, but there's been little planning to efficiently promote the two. Bigelow-Sanford and the F. Schumacher Co. this year They've harmonized two carpets and two Waverly prints in color and in pattern, named them bell ringers of 1850. The Bigelow carpets are “Carillon,” a graceful leaf design, and “Chorale,”
. a sculptured leaf pattern with an embossed effect.
i
The fabrics, for slipcovers and draperies, together with the carpets represent eight color schemes. Each priced at’ $5.95 a yard, “Carillon Bells” and “Malmaison” are scaled for use either in modern or traditional interiors. The former has a bell-shaped fox glove; the latter is a large scroll. Both are printed on Etruscah cloth, an fnexpensive antique satin, made of spun rayon and combed ‘cotton.
‘South Pacific’
Dominant colors in the fabrics were selected to blend with |
rose and beige of the carpets. “Carillon” at Block’s, Banner's and Wasson's, is $9.95; “Chorale,” at Colonial, Wasson's, Banner's and Block's, is $10.95. “Chorale’s” embossing has a “permanent” wave which stays put because of its two and three-ply variation. The fabrics are at Block's. Mohawk's “South Pacific” was inspired by the large leaves of the tropics, the popular Broadway musical. It's a bold and handsome design, a carpet which will bear heavy traffic, where footprints will tell no tales. The. pattern is stylized, will accent dramatically either modern or traditional decor. Made by Mohawk mills under $10. Available in sea green, cloud gray, tropic beige or rose at Banner's or Ayres’ Karagheusian's “American Provincial” is designed for that period room. This year there's a carpet for any room, any period, any home. Colors are high in tone: Warm pink, golden yellow and delphinium blue against a bottle green background. Designs are in squares and the motifs stylized flowers and quaint lovebirds. Under $10 at Block's.
