For Accident ‘War' Outlined

Safety-Conscious Public Will Be Aim “Of Conference Here

By CARL HENN

A war is being plotted in In-|

diana—a war against accidental] :

injury and accidental death, Unlike other wars, the result of

this one will be a ‘savings in|

money, human life and misery. For-accidents -each- year: take-a tremendous toll in all three. The battle plan has been laid

out by a group of 150 Hoodsiers| §

organized into the Governor's Safety Conferencé, ~The issue will be joined Oct. 14 and 15 in Murat Temple when the conference meets. Tactics in the coming fray conswt of strict enforcement of one. rule—safety—according ta R. C. Olson and Fred G. Yelton, cochairmen of the conference. Mr. Olson is assistant commis« sioner of labor in Indiana. Mr. Yeiton is safety director of DelcoRemy Division, General Motors

structure on its present site

after razing the old building. One of the principal features of

the new church will be a first-

floor chapél adjoining the pastor’s office. The chapel will stand open at all times to persons wishing to pause for meditation and prayer. The auditorium will seat 800. ‘

which 1500 delegates from the country over recommended each state improve its industrial safety and hygiene. Upon investigation, Mr. Olson and Mr. Yelton discovered Indiana wanted and needed a general, rather than just industrial, program of safety. Organization and inspiration for the safety drive appeared Mar. 31 in Murat Temple, when Gov. Schricker’ told the assembled Hoosier delegates: “Almost every one of America’s 100,000 violent deaths each year is preventable. Those deaths take, on the average, 18 working years and 30 life years for each victim. Millions For Welfare

“Indiana spends $11 million yearly on welfare payments,” he said. “A good portion of this goes to accident victims or to their survivors. And that does not take into consideration medical costs to workers and the money it costs factories to lose the services of workers through accidents; whether those accidents occur in the factory or in the home.” On Hoosier highways and streets, Indiana State Police statistics reveal that 1121 suffered death from traffic injuries in 1949, an increase of 50 over 1948 and of 261 over 1945. In Indianapolis, traffic killed 50 last year. Eighteen died in the first three months of 1950. If the same percentage continues throughout the year, Indianapolis will have 72 deaths for the year. . Bloodshed Statistics

Accident statistics are cold fig-| ures, but warm blood is shed to compile them. Statistics are impersonal numers, but behind them is found the human element of agony in hospital beds. The once-pretty girl from whose mangled face doctors are still picking gravel after a collision may lie next to the child whose eye was jabbed with a fork as he scuffled with his brother at home. The coming conference will promote the passage of legislation to enforce safety where possible. It will put other recommendations before the the public to be adopted as permanent safety| measures. Aim of the conference is to| make the public always safetyconscious,
