Mr. Abel got off! The ceremony is to be read in
on the wrong foot at once by deciding to go after the hearts in- the St. Matthew Evangelical Lu-
stead of the diamonds.
As you see, he could have won the second spade in his hand,
leaving the jack on the board as an entry. Then he could have set up the diamonds by ruffing a third round of the suit in his hand. But actually he won the second trick with the jack of spades on. the board. He led a small heart and finéssed the queen. So far, so good. Then he laid down the ace of hearts—and Mrs. Keen played the king!
Abel Gets Jittery
It now appeared to Mr. Abel that if he tried to ruff a heart with dummy’'s nine of spades, Mrs. Keen would over-ruff with the 10. Then if Mr. Meek’s hand could be reached with the ace of clubs, he would be able to lay down the jack of hearts for the setting trick. This prospect made Mr. Abel Jittery. He decided to play the hand wide open. He took out Mrs. Keen's. last... cashed -the:

small diamond. After an agonizing study he played the jack from dummy and Mrs. Keen won with the queen. She cashed two good hearts and the ace of clubs for down two. Note that Mr. Abel's original] line of play (trying to set up his hearts) would have been successful. If he had ruffed a third round of that suit in dummy he could have returned to his hand with
