“Boom in Ballet
"Reaches Jordan
. Fine-Performance Needs Repeat i in Belfer Setting
“By Henry Butler . The best news to report about the Jordan program, | which jammed the Athenaeum ballroom last night, is that it may be repeated in June. This lively evening of ballet. plus. choral.and-orchestral-music should have been put on in the Murat, “Last night, every seat in the Athenaeum was taken,
there were probably - 200 0 0" ned around and left standing and afiother 100 or. .s soon as they saw the conges- ” Sig tion. Jordan authorities probably! hadn't counted on the recent loical ballet boom, reflected last January in the Hariens Concerts| Borie. Ae Batietts Russe de Monte Carlo i What I was able to see of last night's show from a spot among! other standees at a rear door of the ballroom looked good. “The Sleeping Beauty,” with Tchaikov-| sky music, seemel one of the best jobs Efleen Poston's Jordan! ballet department. has yet turned. l out. Miss Poston has an increasing number of talented students, including veterans of previous Jordan seasons. "They deserve a more adequate stage than they had last night. Cramped for space, they were cramped . in style. * There's no way to give an accurate appraisal of the total performance ‘without seeing it in the Murat, where it certainly should be repeated before the season lends. I might add here that the Jocal| upswing of interest in ballet is a good sign, Ballet, besides being (visually entertaining, first-rate music, isons, I think Jordan ought to go. all out on a program repeating “The ing Beauty." |The Jordan Bymphonette, {ducted by Beldon Leonard, sounded excellent last night. So did what I heard of the Jordan Chorale, directed by Whittington, who "assisted the, Symphonette in accompanying a group - of dances by the Jordan {chapter of Orchesis, national ‘dance honorary. One final comment: Jordan emphatically needs a program-plan-ning authority, Some person or] some committee should plan the! entire season, giving each depart-| ment the best possible break. That's the way to meet growing lcompetition from other .schools. It’s alsp the way to meet rising popular demand fer worth: ‘while entertainment,
