League Files

Special Ceremonies

Held in Capital

Times Special WASHINGTON, - Mar. 7-—Spe-cial ceremonies last week in the office of the Librarian of Congress

the library of noncurrent files of the national office of the League of Women Voters. Dating back to 1920, the records

contain much valuable source material illuminating the social and political history of the last three decades. Presenting the records were Miss Anna Lord Strauss, national league president; Mrs. Harold A. Stone, first vice president, and Mrs. Anne Hartwell Johnstone, director. Luther H. Evans, Congress librarian, accepted the gift. Because the league, a non-

partisan organization, is a kind|

of microcosm of the main social

and political interests of the]

American people, the records of its 30 years’ history reveal the ways in which many changes in society have come about, despite

Papers Arranged The thousands of papers, weighing more than two tons, are now being arranged for the manu-

Dr. Louise M. Young, a special league representative. It is estimated about 150,000 papers will be added to the library's holdings when the processing is completed. ’ Files mirror “the revolution in the status of women and children, throw light on the rise and fall--of -the 18th amendment, il lustrate the spread throughout the nation of the concept of international co-operation in addition “to struggles over Muscle Shoals, consumer protection, fed-

ization of collective bargaining. + Since considerable arrangement and invento~ying will be required before the papers can be used effectively, it will be several months before the collection will

be available to research workers.|

gh By JEAN MANEY YOU'RE HOME from the hospital with your new baby. Whether you followed the theory of natural

childbirth or not, you're prouder of your baby than any mother since Eve, ; After the first week or so though you begin to realize that altheugh Junior is a bundle of joy, he’s also put unwanted bulges on your figure. The first blow usfially falls when you get up and go shopping for the first nonmaternity dress you've bought in months. fae Your old size just doesn’t fit and you discover you've developed a “rubber tire” around your middle. This “spreading’ is natural. It can happen to even the most athletic woman. About six weeks after childbirth abdominal muscles which have. been strétched frequently become flabby and take on fat.

Girdle Helps to Control Bulges

A girdle helps, but. no young mother should depend on one completely. The ideal combinatién is a girdle plus exercise. Begin your exercises, with your-doector’s permission;,—when baby is— six weeks old. v Don't rush at the exercises with the vigor of a high school girl in gym class—remember you're still a little weak. -Rest often and do only as many as you feel able to do. The old “knee chest” position is a good one for the first week of exercises. Get on your hands and knees, arms folded and head resting on them, hips in a straight line from knees upward. Hold this position and contract your abdominal muscles. Repeat four

times and then-roll-ever-en-your-side-and relax Lie Flat to Do This Exercise

Another exercise is to lie flat on your back, draw your knees to a bent position, feet placed on the bed and apart. With your mouth open, take short, quick breaths, moving the abdominal wall up and down. At the same time you draw in your breath, the abdominal wall is pulled in. As you let air out, the abdominal wall goes out. Or you can lie flat on your back with both knees pulled back to your ‘chest. Rock your knees back, lifting your hips a little from the bed each time. Rest between each exercise. Another advanced exercise is to stretch, Lie flat on your back, arms over your head. Keep hips flat and raise your right shoulder and arm and roll over on your left side, Relax and then roll over again. ’

-}--....And the pre-natal exercise of walking around on all fours-is: “fine for the post-natal period, tod.” It is considered a good way

to help tip internal organs back into position and to relieve the strain from the lower back.

Wi ‘ith Complex He's dead sure to try for kisses on the most casual date. » a = WELL, it's just common sense to watch your step with this type, Sister. He isn’t necessarily a dangerous guy, but what a pain! No suave gal wants to get herself talked about by a kiss-and-tell artist. ma ‘More often, perhaps, the boy who likes all the girls is a friendly fellow who hasn't yet picked himself a steady. Take him as you find him, Hon. Match his friendliness with casual cordiality.
