Mrs. James H. Peeling . . . paints in the final touch.

__ By AGNES H. OSTROM ' . IF TODAY'S “Hobby Day” program on the Fairview Campus is any criterion, Butler University’s male contingent had better look to its laureis. The women scored strictly on their own at the pro-

gram sponsored by the university's Women’s Faculty Club. Room 162 in Jordan Memorial Hall has been transformed into an amazing gallery of exhibits representing hobbies of the various mem-

bers. ia

For instance, there's Mrs. James H. Peeling (her husband heads the sociology department), Although she sketched some in high school, she didn’t take up the palette and brush in earnest until 13 years ago. “Bait” was a WPA class in School 66, “free” except for materials. ; From those once-a-week classes she has gone on to lessons in Herron Art School and private instruction. A member of the Indiana Artists Club, she has exhibited in Hegron and the Hoosier alon. : ““I love matching the colors in the painting with those of the model,” she opines. “It intrigues me. It's all lots of fun.” While she prefers the medium of oil, Mrs. Peeling works in pastel and tempera and is doing more watercolor than before. The scene of Miami (shown in photo), which she exhibited, was painted from memory after a trip south,

rs. Paul W. Nicely and Mrs. John W. Best like nothing better than a country auction. These two antique collectors, wives of faculty members of the College of Education, combined their collections and talents to display a four-place table setting in Meakin china with antique silver and glass.’ : They also mddeled gowns of the 1870 vintage. The dresses belonged to Mr. Nicely's grandmother, an early land-grant settler

-in Boone County, -Mrs, Nicely chose a bustle-back brown alpaca

afternoon frock. Mrs. Best's calico print morning costume wag fashioned in simpler, straighter lines, si th women began collecting about ten years ago. Except for occasional pieces of furniture handed down to her, Mrs. Nicely has concentrated on china and dishes. She's particularly fond of one of her first pieces, a hobnail milk glass pitcher, which belonged to her grandmother, ¢ The Bests filled a Cape Cod home which they built in Madison, Wis., their former home; with old furniture, pictures, and glassware. Mrs. Best is especially fond of antique silver, has over 100 pieces. a 3 ;

Hats Take All Art Principles “Becoming hats are like beautiful pictures. They're ageless.” comments Mrs. Karl L. Kaufman, Hoosier born wife of the College of Pharmacy executive officer. ’ Under the name ‘Marie Jo R” she ran ner own millinery studio on Richmond, Virginia's Franklin St. It had been open just eight months when the. family moved to Indianapolis this fall, : But she’s been in the hat business privately for a long time for friends as well as herself. A card file is filled with ideas and picture suggestions are tacked on an easel When she has time she follows her artistic bent painting pastels and oils. But, she insists, “Hats really take in every principle of art—color, line, medium and balance.” Mrs. M. O. Ross, wife of Butler's president, didn’t think she would exhibit for “Hobby Day.” « But she crochets expertly on stunning corde bags. 4 Sculpturing is the hbbby of Mrs. Roland G. Usher Jr. wife of .a history department professor. She has worked with the mallet and chisel since ‘she was 14, After graduation from the

-

University of Michigan she studied in the Pennsylvania Academy

in Philadelphia and in Herron Art School here. “prairie Woman” in walnut wood was completed for today’s exhibit. She has made a specialty of heads including one of her 2-year-old Martha, who likes to make her own “wood chips” beneath her mother’s basement work bench. ) Mrs. Usher also does ceramic sculpturing and works in plasticene. A creche set, finished over the years, graces the Usher fireplace mantel. She has exhibited in Wichita, Kas., as well as the Indiana State Fair, Herron and the Indiana Artists’ events, : Displays of needlepoint, ceramics, silver, jewelry. were’ among other hobbies William F.
