I was able to stay for part of the Villa1obos “Cantilena No. 5” from “Bachianas Brasileriras,” in which Miss Thebom got excellent cello support from the Symphony's first cellist, Joseph Saunders. The program concluded with Richard Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier”
for my money, Dr. Sévitzky has both latitude and longitude. in command of - Beethoven and! | Tchaikovsky. He gets what he wants from an eargerly co-opera-| tive orchestra. He doesn’t merely impose his will on them. They| give, In this eighth pair, they give till it almost hurts. Tone, phrasing, -dynamics—the whole appar-| taus of orchestral performance is there. Plus new meanings in the Beethoven Eighth, new meaning in the Tchaikovsky. Both performances delighted and moved me from start to finish, and gave me new respect for Fabien Sevitzky. The measure of a conductor is! the way his intentions are car--ried-out. Last week's- Bach concert was a special triumph. This week-end’s pair of programs give Dr. Sevitzky more scope, and he
