Many Means Taken To Increase Safety
By EDWIN FP. SORDAN, M. BD. SINCE ABOUT three million
women in the United States have
children each year, anything that a can be done. to increase the safety.
of childbirth or to lessen the pain involved in that process is of very great importance indeed. Great strides have already been
made toward both these objec-;
tives. Today there are many anesthet~ {es which can be given by breath“ing in, by vein or by mouth and/ which, when properly employed, make childbirth comparatively | easy. Anather method which has re-
ceived a great deal of attention is _ the use of an anesthetic injected
into the lower part of the spine continuously during the latter
"stages of childbirth.
n “ THIS PROCEDU RE, which is called “continuous caudal anesthesia” seems .to- be most helpful when properly given. It is not preferred by all obstetricians, however, some of whom have better results with other methods. Another way of. reducing th . pain of childbirth which has received a great deal of attention _ in recent years is the method of | physiological or natural childbirth described by Dr. Read of England.
He assumes that fear and ten- garine, 11; tablespoons unflavored move from heat;
