Mrs. Snyd |

der Still Nursing Bruised Hand From Hand-Shaking at Drucie's Wedding | ' By ELISE MORROW Bare ‘WASHINGTON, Feb. 4—Of all the strange tribal customs of Washington society, the mass-production re- _ ception line is the worst. It is perfectly normal procedure, of course, for any host and hostess to greet their guests, but in Washington such amenities, all too often, develop into an

endurance contest comparable to a six-day bicycle race. Mrs. John W. Snyder, wife of the Secretary of the Treasury,

Snyder attempted to use the same technique, at. the wedding reception, but she proved to be less hardy, as well as less experienced, and thereby suffered greater wear and tear than the First Lady would under similar circumstances. .

Brings Out the Worst

The reception line not only is an ordeal for the people who are giving the party, but also seems to bring out the worst in the guests. To cite the Snyder reception again by way of example, some of the guests broke out of line to refuel at the champagne fountain, then left glasses on the floor to be "kicked and broken by those who followed. Others smoked and ground out cigarets on the floor—still others tried to | shortcut. However wearing, it is a more or less democratic institution, and there doesn’t seem to be anything that can be done about it. It does, after all, give a lot of people an opportunity to say that they shook hands

her right hand which she developed by . daughter's wedding. She left the recep-

necessary to shut off the reception line with about 30 guests still to go.

osed for repairs, they shook as many { as 2000 to 2500 hands in an evening, at the various receptions which the Chief Executive is expected to give each year. The repair work has spared them such

hold such huge receptions, making the Trumans the first First Family to be benefitted ~ by termites. Usually they don't have to shake more than a few hundred hands at a time, these days. Mrs. Truman has developed a definite technique for reception line activities. Her extended hand not only clasps yours, but also moves sidewise, thus neatly passing you on down the line.. Mrs.

Madame Pandit and Drucie Snyder have a date when both get back to Washington. Among the fabulous gifts which the Treasury Secretary’s daughter got for her wedding was an exquisite gold - sari from Madame Pandit, accompanied by an pote telling Drucie to drop by when she has time, for instructions on how to wear fit. . :

Barkleys Back in Light

Now that the Snyder wedding is out of the way, those other newlyweds, the Vice President and Mrs, Barkley, are back in the social limelight. .Mrs. Morris Cafritz, the unofficial leading hostess of Washington, gave a big party for the Barkleys Friday, and next Monday the members of the Women's National Democratic Club will do the same. The floral logistics of the lat-

ter party are something to |
