THERE'S A MAN down in Brown County who likes to be snowed in. Unless the snow is piled in | white drifts around his Nashville studio, artist €. Curry Bohm is unhappy. - 2 “The adopted Hoosier préfers painting snow. landscapes to all other types. However, doing the ocean, he feels, presents the greatest His “Heavy Seas” took first in the 26th annual Hoosler Salon now showing in Block’s Auditorium: Mr. Bohm has been as successful with his snowscapes as he is now with his sedScapes. He won the grand prize in the Hoosier Salon in 1945 with “Gray Hills of Winter.”
He Was Born in Tennessee
. THE LANDSCAPE pailfter was born in Nash--witle;- Tenn: - His mother and father were sopping in the Southern city. while his father, Robert W. Bohm, was executing: a mural commission. : Robert Bohm and his family lived in New. Orleans where he designed Mardi Gras floats and painted the murals for the old St. ‘Charles Hotel and Theater. After the death of nis. father, Curry and his mother moved to Louisville. While a teen-ager he traveled summers up and down the Ohio River with a bush league circus and filled in his afterschool hours learning thé printing trade. When. he was 18 he married his “childhood sweetheart and went to Chicago to study art. Mr. Bohm studied in the Chicago Art Institute and the National Academy of Chicago, ‘He supported himself and his young wife by working in the backshops of commereial printing companies. As 3 student Mr. Bohm heard of the —*hospitality--and--kindness-of the -Hoosiers and the beauties of Brown County.” The Bohms came down to the Indiana hills twice each year. Now the successful artist wishes that more young painters would discover Brown County as he did. After maintaining a Chicago studio for several - years, Mr, Bohm and his wife moved permanently to Indiana in 1932. Mr. Bohm was a charter member of the Brown County Group and is now the president. Living with the Bohms are the artist's mother and an English sheepdog, Mittens. ~~ Mr, Bohm started exhibiting in the Hoosier ‘Salon the second year after its inception and he received his major award last week on his silver anniversary as a Salon contributor. The Bohms’ year is divided into three parts. Mr. Bohm paints in’ his Nashville studio during the winter months. During June, July and August he has a school of landscape painting. Classes, which are for serious art students over 16 years - of age, are limited to 10. There is no formal curriculum and each artist works directly with thé master. On Sept. 1 the Bohms go to Glouster, Me., where Mr. Bohm paints up and down the coast,
