“All that is known is that some of the leukemia vic-| 4
tims treated have shown improvement,” Dr. Schulman said. - “Whether this improvement will be long-lived, we do not know. The longest case treated has been under observation only eight weeks. Not long enough to be sure.” “All T can say to you,” he told the mother, “is that
this is the only treatment that offers a suggestion. of hope.” f : First Treatment Due Tomorrow Jerry. probably won't receive his first treatment until tomorrow, after complete diagnosis. "There's a slim possibility that he might receive instead of ACTH, its sister drug, Compound E, made from adrenal glands. This drug
be able to go back to second grade classes at School 15.
- Reluctant to make the trip, the sick little boy consented ; * only after his mother r-promised-it might “help you go back
to school.” Jerry first became tired and listless last fall. When. he| failed to put on weight under doctor treatments, “he was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital. There in December, a series of tests diagnosed his illness as leukemia, a form of cancer of the blood. Should the new drugs work in Jerry's case, the in jections would knock out the abnormal cells, the normal blood cells would start working and Jerry, who has been kept alive on transfusions, would be able to produce his own blood. He's There to Get Well But all this is over Jerry’s head. All he Khoa is, . he’s here to try to get well. Ill as he was, Jerry was as thrilled as any 7-year-old
He was wide-eyed as his father, an employee of Allisons, carried him up the ramp to the special pillow- -padded seat which stewardesses had turned inte.a bed. * Pilot Capt. Dick Beck came aboard early to meet Jerry,
No, the pilot assured Jerry, the propellors wouldn't hit the side of the ship when the engines started. And,’ when the engines were ready to start, Pilot Beck first called back fo Jerry for the signal to “let "em roll.” «As the plane roared out of the runway, Jerry and his mother waved “goodby” to daddy. Then the tired little .boy settled back to sleep. When ther plane landed, ambulance Btinidants were going to get a stretcher to move him from the ship. Jerry said he'd rather TWA’s Capt. Beck would carry Him. “Sure, I'll carry him,” said the pilot, “We've carried him all the way from Indianapolis, haven't we?” . While Je flew eastward; big; traditionally “hardhearted New York City was being turned upside down for him. vs : : Before the New York City Department of Hospitals would okay his admission to Bellevue, a city hospital, the Children’s Medical Service had to check every hospital in New York to verify that in-town cases were being cared for before out-of-state admittances. Jerry's Calm About Trip Jeriy is pretty calm about his sudden trip. After all,| if ‘that's what it takes to get back in school, he’s willing. -His mother, however, is still incredulous. She and Mr. Punaway had been trying frantically. to obtain the drug for their son, but had failed. It's a coincidence that pituitary extract may be her son's only hope. Mrs. Dunaway used to work at Eli Lilly Co. in Indianapolis and her job was filling ampules with pituitary extract. Mrs. Dunaway knows that there's only the slightest | spark of hope in. the treatments. ‘But a tiny spark can look pretty big. she says, when you ‘ve been without any hope at all. 3 me Jerry's case.

All Except ‘Husband _ Talk About Child
HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 3 (UP)— Ingrid Bergman stunned the movie colony today with a reallife drama that never would get by film censors. Everybody in town was talking about the baby she bore in Rome —everybody except her husband. ‘The news spread like wildfire through the studios and buzzed all night around the tables at Ciro’s and the Mocambo. But Dr. Peter Lindstrom disappeared as soon as the story was out. Hours, later, he still hadn’t returned - to their little white home. “Dr, Lindstrom has no comment now,” his personal representative said, “and I don’t think he ever will have.” Regarded As Father Under California law Dr. Lindstrom is automatically regarded as the father of the child. He visited his wife in Italy for several days early last May, which attorneys said would give him strong grounds for claiming the child if he wants to. Dr. Lindstrom's spokesmen refused comment, however, on whether there would be any change in the divorce plans. The doctor’ plans: ta divorce the star in California, and. she already has filed for a quick Mexican decree. The only forthright comment came from Colleen Townsend, a 21-year-old actress who just gave up movies for religion. “Let him who is without sin,” quoted Miss Townsend, “cast the
