County Homemaking
Guiding Hand Behind Clubs
By JEAN TABBERT JACK OF ALL trades and master of many. That's the reputation of Miss Janice Berlin, Marion County home demonstration agent, Friend to all housewives both in Indianapolis and the nearby countryside, Miss Berlin is the guiding hand behind the county's 58 homemaking clubs . . . approximately 1400 women. She finds it's more efficient to dispense her knowledge through the organized homemaking program. But a_telephone call is all that's needed for her to rescue cake Icing that's too thin or advise on the length of a homemade skirt. Current project of the homemaking groups is a crafts program, selected by the members themselves. There's a meeting in September and October of each year in which the officers of the Marion County Homemakers Association do the picking. “We try to do what the women want,” Miss Berlin says.
Examples of the projects they've selected are furniture refinishing, making hooked
rugs, gift wrapping, gift suggestions and holiday decorations, and Christmas cookies and candies , . . just a hint of Janice Berlin's varied talents. Lampshade making, weaving and leather tooling are favored “lessons” now. One homemaking club meets each day, with hangovers—women who've not completed their projects -- included, too, if they've time. 7 Otherwise, the members finish up their tasks when they find a free moment at home or when
