From the Middle East Beat— Lethe’s Charon Needs a Boat

Pilot on River of Forgetfulness

Rubber Canoe Beaches

By GEORGE WEL L ER, Times “Foreign Correspondent

LETHE, Benghazi, Cyrenaica, Dec. 22—The Charon of the River of Forgetfulness has lost his boat.

The Arab Charon of the underground river

Lethe is

unable to paddle out into the stream of oblivion. He would like someone to replace the rowboats he had why the great warriors like Rommel and Montgomery were here. -

Yahia Hammuyda is a 50-year-old Arab who for 14 years now has spent most of his daylight hotir§ underground, cruising the cold clear waters of Lethe, the river of forgetfulness. Lethe, as classical students know, is the river whose waters were sipped by ‘deceased souls preparing to be reborn. They drank it after they crossed the other fumous underground river, the 8tyx, where the fabled hoatman Charon, with his glowing eves, manipulated the passengers into eternity. . » » LIKE CHARON, the legendary figure who had the Styx concession, Hammuda demands a small fee. If he could get his boat replaced, he thinks, he could ask more. The waters of Lethe occupy a cave — with three long, flooded chambers that lies almost under the “palace” —a villa, really —— of the most disputed political figure in North Africa today, the Senussi leader Emir Sayyid Tdrisgs. It was headquarters for Gen. Rodoifo Graziani, who conquered the Se nussi for the Duce. Hapomuda formerly had a rub ber boat donated by the Royal Air Force, with which he used to pro pel passengers down the river of forgetfulness - and back. But tg fliers took away their tiny craft. ” ~ » SHOREBOUND, Hammuda spends his time working over the coughing engine which pumps the water of forgetfulness from the cavern up to the Emir’'s villa. He sees that vandals do not further smash the already mutilated tablet of purple verse by Gabri-.

green, and yellow. Not much is left the same in Lethe, except the tiny shrimps that swim in the dripping cave. Hammuda wants to forget the past, too, -but not by drinking i water. A boat is all 'he wants. Then hie can bring prosperity,
