Larger Program

' Demand ‘Means Test’ | Be Abolished in State

Expansion of a& program to | coppbat tuberculosis among Ne | ropes is planned for 1950, the Indiana Tuberculosis Association announced today. The state tuberculosis rate among Negroes is four or five times greater than among the white population, Murray A. | Auerbach, executive secretary of “the association, said. He urged that educational and X-ray programs be directed pri-marity-at men in the 35 to 4d-age group and women in the 20 to 29age bracket. He said there ‘are more TB deaths among nonwhite pergons in these age levels. Mr. Auerbach alsé called for ‘the abolition of the “means test.” The test is an inquiry into the applicant’s ability to pay for treatment at a sanitorium. “In. Indiana,” he said, “the means test often discourages the tubercular, especially those of the low income group, from entering the sanitorium for treatment.”
