Than 4 Milion, Report Shows
Has Been Claiming Paid Membership Of Six Million By FRED W. PERKINS Serinps-Howard Stat Writer WASHINGTON, Déc. 19—The CIO made. public its annual fi-/ nancial statement today for the first time, and thus started immediate questioning about the! size Of its membership. | The CIO -has been claiming) 6 million dues-paying members, but the financial report indicated less than four million. The latter figure is reached by dividing the “per: capita” tax required from each member into!
into the year that ended Sept. 30.| The total dues-paying membership during the year is shown to be| 3,688,349. | The per capita tax of each] member to the national organization was 96 cents a year. The total reported received through| such payments was $3,540,815. | CIO spokesmen pointed out that many actual members may have been’ delinquent in dues, which include payments to local unions as well as the per capita taxes to the national organization. 11 Booted Out The 11 national and international “leftwink” unions that have been booted out, or are in process of examination toward being booted out, also. wegg cited as possible reasons fol the discrepancy in the figures, However, affairs with the leftish unions did not reach a showdown until the CIO's Cleveland convention in November — after the date of the financial report. All these leftish unions claimed! to be up in payments to the national CIO. Unless the CIO is successful in recapturing most or all of the members of the dissident unions, its membership figures will show a drop in the next. financial report. The 11 unions have been| described by Philip Murray, CIO} president, as representing less! than 10 per cent of total CIO membership. The largest of them, ! the United Electrical Workers! has claimed “a membership of: 425,000: — The CIO has chartered another; ution, the IUE under leadership
of CIO Secretary-Treasurer James Jf
B. Carey, to corral members of
paign ‘and ,others similar to it" and for general organizing pur-
