Variety Greatest Since 1938

By SALLY SWING United Press Staff Correspondent PARIS, Dec. 16—Christmas rert from Paris: At Madelios en's Shop, opposite Madeleine Cathedral in the heart of Paris, men’s white poplin shirts are going for 2950 francs ($8.43). White silk shirts, whicn are especially popular as Christmas gifts, sell for 4050 francs ($11.55). Monsieur Duval, the average Paris shopper, is generally pleased with the wide choice of goods available this holiday season but he winces somewhat at the prices. They are on the average 10 to 20 per cent higher this year than last at Madelios, and, he shrugs, why should one not assume that is the case at any store? Yet the Duvals of Paris are not necessarily going in only for strictly utilitarian gifts. Madelios reports that the fastest selling Christmas item is a reversible classic ski sweater, navy blue with red and blue stripes on one side and maroon with powder blue stripes on the other.
