We, the Women— Teen-ager Told to Have

More Respect

Girl, 18, Ashamed Of .Parents' Home

By RUTH MILLET NEA Staff Writer

I AM WRITING this column for one particular 18-year-old girl=though it may hit home to a number of other teen-agers. Your mother. who sounds like an intelligent woman, signs her letter “An Unhappy Mother.” And what is making her unhappy? You are. You and your scornful attitude toward the kind of education for living she has tried and is trying to instill in you. . Do you know what she says of you? In her estimation I am just an old fogey and no other mother requires the things that 1 do. . “She is an intelligent girl, doing well at school, but her

attitude at home is almost un-

“She treats everything at home, including the furnishings with contemptuous scorn. Her room is disorder (itself. She cares nothing about keeping it tidy and if I clean it up for her the moment she steps into the room clothes, shoes, books, pa-| pers. etc., are scattered all over | the bed and floor.” | |

~ ~ . THERE IS MORE, but that should be enough to give you a picture of how you look to your mother.

It isn't a very pretty picture, is it? Of course, I haven't heard your side of the story. And you are bound to have a side. . v But whatever it is—you are glving your mother some very bad years. It isn't easy to be young, as anyone who has outgrown youth fully realizes. But it isn’t necessary for a girl to treat her mother and her home with con-

But at least give your mother credit for trying. And when the two of you aren't in agreement, be enough of a lady to put your case before her in as pleasant a way as you.can, instead of creating a scene. And while you are being supported at home, try to have enough decency not to be contemptuous of the way your home is furnished.

You'll have your own home
