Mrs. America Speaks Up—

U.S. Wives Strike Back At Englishwoman's Charges

Deny They Enslave Husbands, Demand First Attention in Reply to Anonymous Critic

| | 1

| By WILLIAM McGAFFIN, Times Foreign Correspondent LONDON, Dec. 14 Are American women spoiled and rude? Do they enslave their hushands? I« the almighty doltar the yardstick of all their measurements? Are their voices ‘the most tiring, grating and unmusical” of any race in the world?

| Do they demand first attention even before their hushand's job? | De they make snobs out of thei children and overindulge them un til home sweet home succumbs to a teen-age tyranny? | In an open letter to “Dear Mrs America’ an anonymous English- | woman who “has been a close ob- | server of your American woman- [ hood for some time,” has charged | that these things are true. Huhdreds—ef women, however, {both English and American, have {taken issue with her opinion. {Their letters are being printed [in the —Recorder. the London {weekly Which published the orig{inal complaint. 3 t Here are a few samples: | An Englishwoman, Aline Richards, of the Martyns House, Pud|dletown, Dorset, wrote: | “I very much regret you should {publish an attack on American women’s manners. I regard all attacks, besides being the gross{est ingratitude to a nation that (has twice saved us from defeat, as being due to, perhaps, uncon{scious jealousy.” : Miss Richards said she met a {tot of American women during {the war and found their manners better than many English- {

sistent on telling us all our wrongs, our boorishness, our selfishness, our general lack of culture and understanding. “I always feel a little as If someone had eaten a dinner in my home and then said, ‘Your roast was tough and your pie was terrible’.” Mr.-Duffe--said--she -belongs-—to the middle class, is a college graduate, worked before she was married, and now has a “wonderful husband’ and- three young sons-}-Her husband's main Interests are ‘his job, his family and his home." Despite the Englishwoman’s assertion, Mrs. Duffe said she rated these things above the dollar “the stability of our democratic form of government, the political and personal security that is ours, and the fact that our boys, if they they wish, may become priests without fear of being jailed, or shoe salesmen, or cooks, without class consciousness and with/ opportunity to advance if they want to work for it.” ‘Take Another Look’ A Massachusetts woman, C. A Summers, East Longmeadow, advised the Englishwoman: ‘Take another look—at a Mr. and Mrs Average American and their families.” Miss Summers is engaged to an Englishman, a sea man from Lancashire, and she loves him so much she “wouldn't have the heart to ensiave him.” The Recorder, however, still sides with its anonymous correspondent. It agrees with her that American women are ‘getting worried” about the faults she has found in them.

women. may add that «+ French [people's good manners are us{ually only on the surface and {they can be very critical when {they are here, hut the French, {though for the most part immoral and cruel and cowardly, seem to be sacred to the English | press.” Defends Husbands A Texas woman, Mrs. Patrick | Murphy, Houston, wrote: “Certainly we have women in {this country who are spoiled.
