Arkist Finds Antique Surroundings — Inspire Creative Work in Ceramics
Mrs. Lett Follows
.-Ancient Craft in Home
By AGNES -H. OSTROM “A DRESDEN _APPETITE and a five and ten cent. store pocketbook.” This, says Mrs. Colin L, Lett, -accounts for. her taking up the ancient craft of ceramics which is fast becoming one of today's finest arts, 2 And Dresden characteristios predominate throughout her work which has the appearance of old world craftsmanship. A vacation trip to the Smoky Mountains a little more than a year ago gave Gladys Lett the impetus that began this new phase of her artistic career. Already well known to her friends and relatives as an antique collector and painter of oils and pastels, she watched the art heing taught. “I iaid down the brush and took up mud pies,” she gayly remarks.
To Speak to Club
Members of the Seventh District, Indiana Federation of Clubs, will have the opportunity to see models of Mrs, Lett's work and hear her talk about her methods at the Friday afternoon meeting in Block's Auditorium. She Is also fine arts division chairman for the district. Her workshop, a converted room on the second floor of the Lett home, 1815 N. Pennsylvania St. houses her kiln; clays, glazes and modeling tools. A plaster covered mixmaster bowl holds a half-mixed ingredient and molds which she plans to repse line the shelves of a utility cabinet, “I've learned,” Mrs. Lett as< Barts, "through sad to save any mold I think = might possibly want to use again.”
All Types of Pieces Figurines, candlesticks, lamp bases,_doll heads, place card holders, vases, salt and pepper shakers, piggie banks, cigaret trays, woven candy baskéts" and dishés are just some of the many pleces she has fashioned. In the jewelry line there are earrings and pin sets and buttons, ‘One of the pieces she will show Friday will be a bisque head. The white clay, dried to leather hardness, has been fired one once, but not glazed. An-

Nine entries jn the Indiana State Fair this year rated two blue’ ribbons, including one for the best glazed piece displayed, a record for any first year exhibitor. Next year the outstanding Dresden-like flower and lace decorated pieces, set off with gold glaze, are destined to bring in additional blue ribbons for their designer.
