CHICAGO, Dec. 10 — A ganot just in occasional pieces but in complete correlated groupings, will put trends in fitalies when the Winter Home Furnishings Market opens at the American Furpiture Mart Jan. 9. positions in the field.
Here is a breakdown of specific trends which appear in living, dining and bedroom styles as preparations for the Winter Mar-

The blue, white and yellow kitchen has charm, provides a setting for Mr. Ax's antique bottle
collection. By JEAN TABBERT PRACTICAL ideas pay off in better living. Those of Edward Ax and Frank Metheny, two young Indianapolis buginessmen, turned a bungalow garret into a glamorous apartment under the eaves. The garret is in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Ax, 4152 College Ave. And the men admit the project never would have been successful without the help the elder Axs, Edward's parents, gave them. A need for a larger place to entertain and a hankering to try their hand at decorating set off the bachelors’ move.

The attic, drafty and crowded though it was, challenged them. First, the ceiling was completely insulated. Then it and the walls were covered with plaster board seamed together with tape. The sloping eave effect was retained and gives the apartment much of its charm. All the rooms are covered with linoleum for the bachelors want to minimize housekeeping duties.
Shutters in Kitchen
The elder Mr. Ax helped with mu of the building and installed the electrical appliances. Mrs, Ax made the draperies and curtains all over the house. The bachelors made all the lamps in the place with a single exception, the planter shown in the living room photograph. Since heating is a major problem, shutters were used to hide the kitchen instead of doors. They allow the leat to penetrate the culinary quarters, yet keep cooking odors localized. The shutters, many of the doors and much of the lumber were obtained from lopral wrecking companies. . There are two entrances. to the apartment . . . one an outside stairway at the back of the bungalow, the other an inside one leading to the downstairs. This latter is handy, especially “when we don’t want to cook.” the men say. Mrs, Ax still has adequate storage space. It's hidden behind the plasterboard walls throughout the house, reached through doors concealed in the living room and foyer.
Hoop Skirt Chair
. Angle lamps—the kind. that swung from the ceiling of trains years ago—flank the entrance to the foyer. Other antique touches are ‘a hoop skirt chair upholstered in red satin and an old black and gold flax wheel that's been made into a lamp.
The wood on a marble top |
commode is painted black to match the austere black and white wallpaper and the black and white linoleum squares on the floor. But the over-all effect is delightful. Accessories like the red braided rug. carriage lamps and an old wheat scale that holds flowers help to make it 80. Gold and white documentary print curtajns here tie the room into a unit, cover the misshapen windows. Celling-to-floor poles protect

covers the hallway’s walls. The color serves as a foil to the vivid shades used in the rooms opening off it, And it highlights
“a blond maple chest in the hall
that holds “about everything.” Beige curtains hung cottage style cover one entire wall of the living room. It's a big area cut down ingeniously so the eye gets a cheery picture. Yet space is adequate for the large furniture the men chose, result is luxurious. How has the space been minimized? A sham fireplace in one wall is topped by an indirect light covered with fluorescent tubing. This lights up the plants behind and the Chinese prints on the wall above. All this in« terest dwarfs the long wall. A large red sofa eats up space along another wall of the room, twin green lounge chairs and a red one absorb it still further, Mr. Ax made the desk pictured, from a storage chest and pedestal. The two were combined with a custom-cut plank.
Long Coffee Table
Another homemade piece here is the eoffee table’ constructed from an old library table. (These were used behind couches in the early part of the century). Another plank was laid over the main part of the table to form a long surface for partying. Walls are painted chocolate brown with the exception of the wall and ceiling covered with brown and beige angle wallpaper, The doors of the room also are papered which helps to give the room unity. The door here which opens onto the hall was designed expressly to add emphasis. Ply-

Remade Cabinet
Chief storage unit is an old kitchen cabinet painted white to match the appliances. The center was cut out and just the top and bottom sections used, The top of an old oak table circles the support inserted in the apartment as a precautionary measure. It's covered - practically with inlaid linoleum and painted yellow. The leatheret of the chair upholstery also is yellow, A circular lazy Susan above the table holds bottles and other table accessories. Mr. Ax planned the ledge above the

bottle collection. Like ‘the living room, the bedroom also has a spacious look. . That's because storage space is so adroitly concealed. Twin closets face each other at one end of the room and matching chests also are built into opposite ‘walls, 8 These latter, now painted white with rose drawer pulls, were a vivid purple and green when they were purchased, A white ice cream parlor table and chair sets off the rose walls, black linoleum and grey throw rugs.
