when. West showed out. Now it was West who was smiling, as he deduced, from declarer’s unprintable remarks that East had two winners somewhere in "his hand. | East, too, looked rather pleased as he sat behind dummy’s king-! jack of spades with the queen, 10 and another one. South was shaken but not overcome by the bad spade break. He saw how he could still make the hand if he could guess his opponents’ distributions. At the third trick he led a club to dummy’s ace, pulled a club back | & and ruffed it. Then he led the] :. king of hearts and followed with a small heart to dummy’s ace. He cashed the gueen of hearts and sighed with relief when East followed suit to the trick. } |
Leads Club |
Next he led another club from ithe board and ruffed it in his (hand. East was now out of clubs and hearts and a worried look had come over his face. He could see that it was going to work. South led the king and queen of diamonds, throwing two clubs from the board. East had to follow suit with the nine and jack. Now’ came the final blow. South led the 10 of diamonds and discarded the 10 of hearts from dummy. Poor East couldn't do anything about it. He had nothing left but trumps. He ruffed with the five of spades and then had to lead from his queen into dummy’s king-jack. “A nice play,” complimented North, “but from the way you moanédl and groaned I thought we were down at least four. I sincerely hope the next hand you play is a simple laydown."
