Spotlight Shifted From Big Deal Trading - Talks & Minor League Meetings
By CARL LUNDQUIST, United Press Sports Writer
BALTIMORE, Dec. 6-—Jtist about the time a lot of big deals! seemed to be cooking at the minor league meetings, somebody put|
the fire out.
80 instead of the ‘expected frenzy of trading involving major league teams, the magnates turned their attention today to the squabble on the controversial “bonus rule” which comes up for
repeal tomorrow. Whereas at first it. had appeared that Commissioner A. B. Chandler, with backing from the major league executive council, would have enough support to wipe out the regulation, it looked now as if it would stay on the books. The rule makes it mandatory that a player signed with a bonus be brought to the majors within a year or be forfeited to the draft. Fight Repeal of Rule A bloc vf big league club owners, headed by Hank Greenberg, new general manager of the Cleveland Indians; Fred Saigh, president of the St. Louis Cardinals; Bill Dewitt, président of the St. Louis Browns, and Warren Giles, general manager of the Cincinnati Reds, have mustered among their farm clubs considerable opposition to repeal of the rule Along with small, independent club owners, they may have enough strength to prevent such action. A super-deal between the Boston Braves and New York Giants, whereby Boston General Manager John Quinn was expected to start unloading the 11 dissenters who made life miserable for Manager Billy Southworth last summer, apparqntlv. had hit a road hlock. “We're not any closer to doing business than we were a week ago.” sald Met Ott, Giants, who is one of the chief negotiators.
Involves Key Players The deal, which could start a chain reaction of transactions involving other teams, was supposed to involve Infielder Eddie Stanky, Pitcher Johnny Sain, and possibly even young Shortstop Alvin Dark of the Braves, with Shortstop Buddy Kerr, Outfielder Will Marshall and a couple of lesser light pitchers of the Giants, was at a stalemate stage. 80 was the budding transaction between BSaigh of the Cardinals
and his arch rival, Branch Rickey, of the Dodgers. They have negotiated for more than a week and Saigh said he was ready to call the whole thing off. “It isn't often that a first and second place club can close a major deal anyway,” he said. ‘And as far as Brooklyn is concerned, I'm not trading a first line player unless we get one in return. Apparently, that isn't the way Mr, Rickey had it figured out.” The Dodgers had heen seeking rellef Pitcher Ted Wilks and the Cardinals wanted Outfielder Carl Furillo. Browns Hold Firm The Browns still were sticking to their announced poligy of being ready to peddle anybody of the club over 28 and since that includes both Second Baseman Jerry Priddy and Third Baseman
Bob Pillinger, it looked as if they 8
might eventually work a deal with Cleveland. Manager Red Rolfe of the Detroit Tigers, confident that his club can be a hot contender from start to finish if it gets infield help, also was in the market for Priddy and could give up a potential hot-shot like Outfielder Dick Wakefield. But the talk went -on-—and- that was the size of it. Aside from the chatter, the minor leagues had a busy and unprecedented session vesterday, drafting 103 players in a conven-
tion "auction” for a total outlay
of $340,150.
