RECENTLY I read this news article carrying a Johannesburg, South Africa, dateline: “The youngest radio officer in - the South African Airways System said today that he milked a full-grown Honess to win -the hand of a farmer's daughter in marriage.” The bridge si = father refuségis % = = to permit the marriage unless his daughter's suitor

Ruth Millett That's an extreme example of a Papa impressing young men with the fact that his daughter is a prize to be won. . But it serves to point out a fact a good many present-day American parents are overlooking. “If you want to get your daughter married off don't shove her at her suitors.”

” ” n » LET'S LOOK at the technique of Mr. and Mrs. Jones for an example of how a lot of Amerfcan parents go about trying to marry off a daughter. When Susie Jones has a few dates with a young man her parents look him over and if they think he is eligible for the job of supporting their daughter, which they are more than ready to turn over to someone else, then they go to work. They break their necks to be. cordial to the young man. They let daughter. have the family car for dates. They take the couple dining and dancing at some fancy night spot, and Papa picks up the check. They literally, throw their daughter at the young man, And what happens? Why, pretty soon you hear that daughter and her latest young man have “broken up.” He's been scared clear out of the picture, whereas he might have hung around long enough to ask Susie to set the date if her parents hadn't seemed so anxious to get her married off. : How much wiser are the parents who take the attitude that their daughter is a prize “to be won, rather than ope to . be handed over to the first young man who can be encouraged to. pop the $64 question.
