Because they could schedule only five regular Southeastern rivals this season, the Wildcats rank second to Tulane in the Southeast, each having lost to one conference foe. Tulane has defeated five SEC opponents. Santa Clara, Kentucky's opponent in the 64,358-seat Orange Bowl, lost two games and tied one. The Broncos fell before Cali fornia and Oklahoma and fought to a deadlock with Stanford.

By BILL EGGERT There may be enough good scoring habits left over from 1948-49 to make Butler's basketball Bulldogs a winning collegiate team again this season. The Bulldogs, who won 18 and lost five last year, will try out those habits Wednesday night in the Fieldhouse against an alumni squad and will open their regular season here Saturday night against Illinois. The Illini will be one of five Big Ten quintets the Bulldogs will meet this season. Lettermen who have returned for the 24-game schedule are Ralph (Buckshot) O'Brien, Butler's all-time leading scorer with 828 points for three seasons; Jimmy Doyle who threw in 200 points last season; Capt. Ralph Chapman, Dee Baker, and Marvin Wood. Coach Tony Hinkle lost John Barrowcliff, Bob Evans and Bill Shepherd by graduation but that slack will be taken up by D IFAnSTer Bedford who Fayed very little last year.
