Stanford Works on Ship Stabilizer

— DAVID DIETZ o0 Writer Stanford At engineers are co-operating with the U. 8. Navy in the development of a ship stabilizer designed to take the roll out of the rolling, seas and transform the deck of a ship into a better platform for firing & gun or landing an airplane. ‘While the Navy is primarily in. terested in the device for what improvements it may lead to in the accuracy of gunfire or the ease with which planes can get back to a carrier; the citizen who travels for business or pleasure may eventually find the stabilizer | 8 blessing also, particularly if he! is prone to seasickness, | “The theory of the new stabilizer wis worked out more than decade! ago by Dr. Nicholas Minorsky| who is at present acting profes-| por of mechanical engineering at Stanford. | ‘U.8. 8. Minorsky’ | A model named the “U, 8, B.| Minorsky,” was built at the New| York Naval Shipyard in 1938. The experiments were sufficiently) promising to justify full-size tests and a stabilizer was built for| tests on the destroyer Hamilton! in 1940. However, the experiments were cut short by World War II The studies have now been resumed aboard the niinesweeper Peregrin, off the coast of Virginia, The stabilizer consists of two large tanks which are installed on opposite sides of the ship. The tanks are partially filled with water and the bottoms of the two tanks are connected across the ship by a duct. Starts Pump Action a iumant called the “13% accelerometer, which ny fonaive 10 the TOI of aT: controls a series of The instant that the ship pump. to roll, this Instrument actuates electric relays which

duct to the tank on the side where the roll started, thus leveling the ship. By shifting the water from one tank to the other, Navy engineers expect to cut the roll of a ship by as much as 80 per cent, The present experiments aboard the U, e have shown the best results are obtained if the duct na the two tanks is above the ship's center of gravity. When it Is in this position, the of the water traveling in dus aids the stabilization

"Should Be Small engineers are also conthat the duct should be relatively small in order to increase acceleration foree of

However, if it is necessary to the duct below the center of gravity, then the duct should be as as possible to acceleration force in For in this case, the would be opposing stabilizarather than aiding it. Two graduate students at Stanford are aiding Prof. Minorsky in carrying on the present tests, They are Albert J. Morris and Joseph H, Chadwick Jr.
