I was wandering about in an antique shop a few years ago and noticed a long loop of buttons, beads, coins and other trinkets hanging from a spinning wheel. The. fine old lady running the shop willingly answered my questions as to what it was. She told me that years ago many.people collected small articles, strung them, and hung them up as.charm strings.” What good or-evil spirits this charm string may have influenced I do not know, as today we have outgrown these superstitious notions. This does not mean however that a similar collection might not be a “charming” hobby. A soft-copper wire might be used for your collection as it is much easier than string to stick through the small holes in your trinkets, To start a charm string ask mother to go through her button box with you, and see how many odd ones can be found. Add bitts of chain, coins, seeds, jewelry, tokens, washers, and other hardware.
