Many [Oldsters Better On Some Work

Having been laid off after working for the past 10 years as an inspector in a metal trades industry because of nek of new business, I am looking for. a mew connection. 1 am 48 years old and have been told in several instances that my-age | is against me: What are we oldsters to do?

By JAMES GRAYSON Entirely too much is being said about “too old at 40” and laying off 50-year olds on the shelf. This appliés to employers, the public, and workers themselves. A ‘man may be too old for some kinds of work which a 20-year-old six-footer, weighing 180 pounds fight do better. This same 20-year-old person, however, may be too young to do the work you have heen doing. He has not had enough ~experience.

I you have a ‘personal Jab problem, write James Graysom. in care of The Times. 3

Some employers want and need men who have much physical Alaming And who have several working vears. ahead of (hem But occasionally these ‘same employers need more mature work ers, Other employers really pre fer men with years of experience

If vou could look behind the scenes in many plants you'd be sutprised to see the number of oldsters holding important jobs A good part of the backbone of many . business and industrial firms are in their forties, fifties and sixties. And. in the professions you'll find lots of them. You and other oldsters can help your cause if you will stress your assets and talk less about vour not being wanted by employ ers The employer is interested in what vou can do for him. Remember that You should contact those employees whom you feel need someone with your ability, training, and experience. It takes time thought and energy to locate such employers. Maybe one of them needs you as badly as you need the job he has apea.
