My Day— Study Ballot Propositions

By ELEANOR ROOSEVELT NEW YORK, Oct. 31—There are certain things that confuse many people when they go. to vote on Election Day. Sometimes they have made a study of the candidates and they are pretty sure of the people they want to vote for.

Can Reform Otherwise She'll Have Few Friends

SELFISHNESS is an ugly trait, dominate a

If she begins early enough, 4 any girl with selfish leanings is a hopeful candidate for reform. There is still hope for her that she won't grow up to be a selfish woman who is more in love with herself than with other

The most familiar sign of selfishness is a lack of generosity. The girl who is inclined to de stingy with her money and time, niggardly with her offers of help to friends who need it is suspect. To rid herself of suspicion, she will have to force herself to be a little more generous, a little more considerate.

. - #” IF SHE demands things from her parents which they can't afford to give her, she should face the fact that she is selfish. There is another sign that she is selfish if she takes advantage of her brothers and sisters, pursues her aims at the expense of others. Being less self-centered, showing more concern for others and making a little more effort to be

to begin a reform to conquer selfishness, The moment a girl starts working to achieve this aim, the quicker her rewards will be; warmer responses from people, more friends, more appreciation from her family plus the happy glow that comes from giving and escaping from the narrow little world of “self.” :

Then take into consider-\Not only will you very likely get

ation your left-hand opponent's discard to your partner. This will tell you what cards your partner does not want, when he refuses to pick them up. Also you can discard the safe cards as your partner discards. In other words, you should try to keep the same cards you think your partner has, and in this way you both are more apt to be saving the same cards. The above applies mostly when you and] your partner need 120 points for your initial meld.

Game Often too Fast When you need 50 or 90 points for your initial meld the game often proceeds too quickly to develop your hand in any particular manner. Also, if you discard the same cards as your partner, they are apt to be used by your left-hand opponent. (Since your partner doesn't have it, your opponents probably have.) Another important peint to remember in four-handed Canasta is, if your side needs 120 meld and you do not have the jokers or wild cards, then it is up to you to play to protect your partner. In other words, one hand plays to meld 120 points while the other partner tries to build up his hand 80 that he will be able to play off his partner’s hand. In my next article Mr. Crawford will give you more of the fine points on Canasta. Now for my regular questions and answers: Question: Is it wise to pick up small pack or should I wait for the pack to have 10 cards or more?”

In other words, I have two aces in my hand and the up-card is an ace, and I need 50 points for my initial meld. I know I can take the pack, but can I count this third ace to help me make my initial meld? Answer: You most certainly

can. The up-card can be counted as part of your minimum meld if you wish, but no other card in the discard pile can be used for that

purpose, After you have legally melded the up-card and picked up the pack, you can proceed to play cards from the pack onto your
