‘Death last night wrote “finis” to the career of another race driver. Eddie Haddad, 37, long a popular midget race car driver with Indianapolis fans, was killed at Gilmore Stadium, Los Angeles, when his car smashed into a retaining wall as he attempted to pass on the curve. Bears Lack Passer
After the Western Michigan tilt, Bear players said, “Butler was
7 to 0, than Western Michigan was last week.” The Bears’ coach, Irwin Uteritz, is'skimpy with reserves this season. He has develop-d a rugged ground offense for lack ot a passing attack. Spearheading the Bears’ line is Norm Halliday, a 215-pound tackle who has been labeled “the Leo Nomellini of Washington U.” Since football was resumed here in 1947, the Quincy, Ill, athlete has missed only one game. Butler's squad was scheduled for a light workout later this afternoon at Francis Field. The jeam will bunk in the Melbourne otel.

Purdue Hopes For Upset Over Nlinois
By BoB WOODWORTH Times Special Writer LAFAYETTE, Oct. 21 — Purdue’s football squad, with the backing of a gala homecoming crowd that is expected to reach around 48,000, will be set for a real effort to turn yardage into points as it meets favored, oncebeaten Illinois here tomorrow. The Boilermakers, whose overall performance as far as total offense is concerned has been much more impressive than their 1-3 record to date would indicate, are hopeful of making their yardage more productive in the point column with a more consistent team performance. Averaging better than 250 yards on running and passing plays in four games to date, Coach Stu Holcomb’s crew has nevertheless been unable to score more than two touchdowns in any one game. Throughout this week’s intensive drills, Holcomb has emphasized downfield blocking on the part of his forwards as well as better timing on forward pass plays in the hope that despite a {suicide schedule the squad may be able to spring an upset. Hope for Szulborski With the single exception of
Kenneth Smith, who is slated to
take over the right guard duties, the Boilermakers are expected to stick to the same offensive combination that has borne the brunt so far this season. There is hope, of course, that Harry Szulborski will return to the “47-48” form that made him one of the nation’s most consistent gr gainers. Harry, who began to show signs of his old rocket starts in Florida last Friday night, has had a full dose of scrimmage this week for the first time since his untimely preseason injury. Support for Harry will be provided by Glenn Young, sophomore prospect who has seen but little action, and Neil Schmidt, a race horse type who excells as a pass catcher. Although Illinois rules as the favorite to remain in contention for a place well up in the Big Ten first division, the past history of the series, if nothing else, serves to buoy the hopes of Boilermaker partisans. It has been just 30 years. away back in 1919, since Illinois defeated Purdue in Lafa-

The other member of the Big Three in action, Indiana, faces a resurgent Pitt Panther in Bloomington.
