@ The Gas Utility's waterless gas holder at Fall Creek and Northwestern Avenues is an interesting structure. It is interesting, because itis a piston-type holder; a 600-ton steel piston or disc floats up and down on gas. The piston may be plainly seen in this cut-away drawing: as the holder is filled with gas (from the bottom) the piston rises; as gas is used out of it, the piston is lowered automatically. The edge of the piston carries the sealing mechanism, which is filled with tar; and tar keeps the gas below the piston as well as furnishes lubrication—so the piston may move freely inside of the holder.

STATISTICS ABOUT THE LANGSDALE GAS HOLDER

% It is the tallest structure of its kind in the world, 394 feet to the top of the sirplone beacon, 106 2 feet taller than the monument on the Circle.

% It is 228 feet in diameter, large enough inside to lay out a regulation baseball diamond with about 100 feet left over for the field.

% It took 3,200 tons of steel and 3,750 tons of concrete to build it; into it went over a million rivets and 13,000 pounds of welding rods.

% The actual erection took 128 full working days, and it cost $700,000. The holder was completed in March 1941.

% It took 935 gallons to paint the inside and over 4,800 gallons of paint for three

% It holds 12,000,000 cubic feet of gas and represents one-half of the Gas Utility's

Hoioer ?

Gas holders are actually storage tanks, nsed to level out the differences between gas consumption and manufacture. Gas is made at a ‘steady rate, but you use it in fits and spurts. During periods of the day when consumption exceeds the amount of gas made, the difference is taken out of the holders. When consumption is below the rate of manufacture, the holders are filled again. Thus, you are assured of a steady supply of gas, regardless of when you want it and how much you may want. The gas business is not as simple as it looks. It takes a great deal of special machinery, a lot of experienced man-power to furnish good gas service to a magket the size of Indianapolis: There are over 120,000 gas customers, scattered over 400 square miles of territory, using an average of 26 million cubic feet of gas a day. Experienced employees are the Gas Utility's greatest asset. Their know-how is as valuable as good machinery. Gas Utility employees have an opportunity to acquire experience, because their jobs are unaffected by the thangivg tides of politics.
