GATHER ODD GOURDS FOR DRYING " During the harvest season and at our popular fairs we often see’ beautiful and odd gourds on the vegetable stands, Gourds have: many uses today, but they are mostly used for ornamental pur< poses. The pumpkin shown is not a true gourd, but like the squas! ' it is a very close relative. I included the pumpkin in the dra to show how gourds may be used to carry out your Halloween decs oration and add much color. 5 If you like the idea of gathering gourds, select those with stems, and if you are still picking them from the vine in the warmer sec tions of the country, select those whose stems have turned browns Some gourds will keep for years, but do not shellac them until they are completely cured or they will rot. They may be waxed however with a light furniture wax without slowing their drying. » Such odd names as Gherkins, Goose Neck, Ostrich Egg, Gooses berry, Dipper, and Hercules-Club-add to the fun of being a regulag Gourd collector. During the year TRY IT will show you new for dried gourds. TOMORROW-—Collect Acorns for Jewelry,
