ADDE GATHER AND COMPARE OLD BIRD NESTS
When the leaves begin to fall from the trees they uncover many of summer's hidden homes. Many birds build beautiful, well ; made nests that last for months after they have started their fall § migration. Some are so tightly woven that they are like little. baskets. If these nests are handled carefully, many of them can be gathered and put on display in your home museum or at. school. Many téachers appreciate their students bringing in nests & so that all may share and compare them. * If you wish to make a permanent collection, they can be¢ saved in old shoe boxes. As your collection grows, note the. various materials used by the birds to construct their homes. ©» We can’t collect the bulky stick nest of the Eagles, Herons, Hawks and Owls, but we can save the smaller twig and stick! nests of the Catbirds, Thrashers, Doves and Shrikes. Mud, barks,’ grasses, leaves, rootlets, horsehair, and even snake skins are: used by birds to make cradles for their young. TOMORROW~—_ Feather a Pine Cone Worry Bird. 5
