Preserve Your Health! By W. L. Latham—Part 1

Which is of greatest importance, your health, or that of the dumb brutes whose diet receives such careful consideration? Every farmer knows his success with animals and fowls depends largely on the quantity and quality of feed supplied. He reads and experiments in order to find out what will produce the best results in growth, or in by-products such as milk and eggs.

But very few ares even inter- " ested in what constitutes a proper diet to preserve the health of their own bodies. Yet the Lord considered this of such importance that He included this very information in the first instructions’ given to the father of the human race. Man was to be sustained by a delightful diet of fruits, nuts and grains: Gen. 1:29. After he sinned, the herb of the field was added: Gen. 3:17, 18,

Some people have the erroneous idea that meat is necessary for those engaged in hard labor. But who ever heard of meat being fed to horses, miles, camels, elephants, or the ox? They - are .strictly vegetarians, yet possess great strength

and power of endurance. Theodore Roosevell. in ‘his East African hunting expedition, discoveréd that”a horse with a

man on his back could run down a lion fleeing for his life in a mile and a half. Fatigue is caused by lactic acid, which is produced by the exercise of the muscles. The more alkaline the blood the more quickly the acid is neutralized. Meats are strongly acid producing. Consequently the meat-eating Mom. is quickly exhausted.

In addition to its acid-producing properties, all flesh is filled with poisons that are in process of being eliminated through the skin, kidneys and intestinal tract. Wheh we consume the-flesh containing these poisons we place an extra burden on our own eliminative organs, thus weakening them for the battle against such ailments as rheumatism, bright's disease, arthritis, high blood pressure, heart ajlments, ete. These are not contagious diseases caused by germs, but by

«. improper living. The infirmities of old age may be greatly

hastened, or delayed, by the quantity and quality of food eaten. Retain your health and youth longer by selecting foods that will keep your blood stream clean and healthy, For the life of the flesh is in the blood.” Leviticus 17:10-14,

The Lord wishes us to prosper and be in health, even as our soul prospers: 3 John 1:2. For this reason He has always shown Himself deeply interested in the diet of His people. When He delivered the Israelites from Egyptian bondage He supplied them with a meatless diet, and set thém free from all their physical ailments, “and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.” Ps. 105:37. But they mourned and wept, saying, “Who will give us flesh to eat.” (Num. |. 11:1-20). The Psalmist says “He gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.” Ps. 106:15.

While we cannot make ourselves good by what we eat, we are vitally affected both physicaly and mentally by a health ful, or unhealthful, diet.. If the healih-of the body is impaired by improper living, the nerves are upset and the brain refuses to function as it should. Consequently our mental efficiency is not what it might have been. The result is likely to be impatience and ill temper, The Christian has a stern battle to fight, therefore he should keep himself in the best physical and mental trim possible,

Even though you cannot change your spiritual nature by a proper diet, you can greatly hinder your spiritual progress by a wrong course of eating. A healthy body and a healthy mind is a definite asset to those who are endeavoring to live the Christian life. * °

For better living, I would recommend that secure the book “Better Meals for Less” sent postpaid for thirty cents. Ifyou follow its instructions you can prepare healthful, appetizing vegeterian meals, and save many dollars on your grocery bill every month.
