“Why do high heels help cripple women's feet?” customers frequently ask Mr. Ross H. Johnson of the “J. P. 1.” FOOT FITTING SYSTEM at 138 East Ohio St., Indianapolis. For proof that it is wrong to raise the heel above the level of the ball of the foot, he suggests, “Try walking tiptoe in your stocking feet for the length of time a high heel shoe is worn.” Then, for further proef, Mr, Johnson submits the accompanying photographs. “Fig. 1 shows the foot in normal position,” he points out, “with the heel resting on the floor. Fig. 2 shows the bony structure properly aligned in this position. Fig. 3 shows the-same foot raised on a high heel. ‘Note the awkward position and that almost all the weight Fests on the ball of the foot. Fig. 4 shows the bony structure out of alignment and the entire foot out of balance. The wonder is that a woman on high heels can walk at all! Whenever the heel is raised so the weight of the body rests on the metatarsal arch (ball of the foot), the results are the same, whether a ie inch. 2-inch or a higher heel is worn. The only difference is the degree of de. formity and the length of time it takes to cripple the foot permanently. Nature has made a perfect foot..a beautiful treation, until it 4s deformed In modern shoes —with tapering toes for both sexes and the extra abuse of high heels for women. To overcome foot trouble the easy, commonsense way, wear ‘J. P. 1! ACTIVATOR shoes. In them your toes are permitted to lie straight in their normal position and the heel is kept in its normal position on a level with the ball of the foot.
