Criticism, Good and Bad

By W. L. Latham

There are two kinds of criticisms: constructive and destructive. The constructive critic is a real friend, because he not only points out our mistakes and shortcomings, but alse tries to encourage us to.improve our dispositions and our method of doing things. But the destructive critic finds pleasure in humiliating us by calling attention to our mistakes in order to make us appear either mean or foolish in the eyes of others. Why are most people so ready to speak of the faults of others? Because they want to appear wiser and better than those they condemn. The critic is virtually sayjng,- “I wouldn't have made such a foolish mistake,” or “I wouldn't have been guilty of committing such a sin.” Another reason is, it is so easy to criticise. No special mental endowment is fequired. Some one has aply said, “Any fool can criticize. And most fools do.” According to the Ancients, when Jove carved the geniuses, he made critics of the chips. - Good material is required to make a genius; but a critic can be fashioned out of any kind of trash, or refuse. Yet man made ‘of such material are usually capable of finding fault with those who accomplish the outstanding feats of civilization, Many people are like the dog that was hitched to the lawn mower. When he stopped to bark at a passerby, the boy said, “Don’t mind the dog, mister. It's easier to bark than it is to work.” Is some one barking at you? Just ignore him, remembering it is easier to bark than to do fomethme worthwhile. = Occasionally people fall into the habit of criticising every one and every thing, and yet do not realize they are guilty of this horrible sin. A good old sister, who was forever talking about the faults of others, failed to realize that sermons dealing with criticism had any reference to her. But one day a new minister, who had been informed of her failing, spoke on this subject. Every time he made a strong point, looking right at this sister sitting iy the front row, he would say, “And you are guilty.” At the close of the sermon she arose, and turning to the congregation, acknowledged * her guilt. She said she had never realized her fault before, but declared she would not rest satisfied until, by the grace of God, she had rooted this thing out of her life, The aspostle says, “We know we have passed from death unto life, BECAUSE WE LOVE THE BRETHREN.” (1 John 3:14.) - No one will make unfavorable remarks about those she loves. If we are truly converted we will ‘have no desires to dwell upon the faults and failings of our fellow men, The Golden Rule says, “All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.” (Matt, 7:12.) We like to have people say nice things about us, or nothing at all: Let's practice this on others. We should be very lenient with the faults of others, but unmercifully critical and severe in dealing with our own, and never rest satisfied until they are corrected. It would be’ ‘a wonderful gift to be able to see ourselves as others see us, but our faults are like the dirt behind our ears— concealed from our vision, but plainly seen by others. As our friends do not like to tell us that our ears are not clean, we have mirrors into which we may look and see for ourselves, it we will. Neither do our friends like to tell us of our faults, but God's word is a perfect mirror into which we may look and see them clearly for ourselves, But just as it does no good to_look into thevmirror and see the condition of our ears unless we scrub them clean, so itis with the faults revealed to us by God's word. It does no good fo see them unless we correct them. “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of libérty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, BUT A DOER OF THE WORK, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” (James 1:25.) If we desire to be saved, we must eliminate our faults. For of the redeemed we. read, “They are without faylt before the throne © of God.” (Rev. 14.5.) Theiefore let's forget the faults of others, and go.to work on our own. : Enroll now for our free correspondence Bible course of 30 | lessons.
