Your Marriage: By Samuel and Esther Kling -

Wife Shouldn't Ask Mate

A

To Give Up Occupation

Q-—Should a wife expect hér husband to change his occupation © to please her?

A—No., Take the case of Mrs. J. who came 10 ‘see us.

She com-

plained that her Husband wasn't working regularly, didn’t support

her properly, and was drinking to excess.

She didn't know just how

to cope with the situation and wondered what to do

Discussion revealed that her husband had been a musician when she married him and had naturally worked nights, He continued his work for two years after their marriage, supporting her in good style, Moreover, they Sot along well, But Mrs. J. felt that Mr. J's working hours were preventing them from having a normal home life, and she insisted that he give up his music and find some sort of day work instead. Her husband succumbed to her pressure and tried several different jobs. But he disliked all of them, and now he wasn't making much of an at tempt to do anything We explained to Mrs. J. that she Was largely responsible for her present situation nthe first place, she knew before marriage what her husband's occupation Was and that it involved night work. Apparently, she was willing to accept him and the life that normally goes with being married to a musician. If. she had any strong objections, she shouldn't have married him at all, We pointed out that it's always A mistake for a wife to persuade her husband to change his occupation when he's happy in it and is able to earn a living. When a

man switches from work he enjoys to work he finds distasteful there's bound to be an unfavorable reaction which will affect the entire marriage. This, obviously is what happened in Mr. J.'s case » . .

Q—What should Mrs. J. do now? = A We urged Mrs. J. to encour- = Age her husband to return to his = former work, We assured her that : though she would have to make 2

some sacrifices, she would be compensated in terms of a more stable and successful marriage. We further reminded Mrs. J that it Is every wife's duty to ad just herself to her hushand's work routine rather than the other way around.
