Bad Break Puts Slam Down Two Muzzy Doubles,

Champion Blows Up

By EASLEY BLACKWOOD WHEN MR. MUZZY doubled Mr. Masters opening grand slam bid, Mr. Dale feared his luck In this rubber had run out. He thought briefly of sacrificing at seven spades but quickly abandoned this idea and sat back to await his fate. It is hard to criticize Mr. Masters’ bid of seven hearts. With any kind of a decent break he

would have made it easily. As the adverse cards were distributed, however, he had to play his best to go down only two tricks, E Mr. Muzzy opened the king of spades and groaned loudly when| Mr. Masters ruffed it. It's typical of Mr, Muzzy to believe that Mr. Masters would open with a seven) bid with a quick loser in his hand. At trick two Mr. Masters laid down the ace of diamonds. It appeared to him that unless the diamonds broke 3-2 the contract would not be made, Actually he would have been worse off if he had taken out all of Mr. Muzzy’s

Street-Length Costume. or Concert-Goers

By LOUISE FLETCHER, Times Woman's Editor THE STREET-LENGTH COSTUME for evening wear is becoming increasingly important in fashion. It may be a decollete evening frock as formal as a ball gown in everything but length. Or it may be a simply styled afternoon frock (like the one pictured) worn with a coat which has ermine trimming to give it late-day glamour. The dress shown, an Eisenberg design ($69.95) from Block's, is a long-sleeved sheath of black crepe accented with jet satin. - Satin frames the wide V neckline and is used as-an underlay for graduated cable bandings of crepe in the skirt. Ermine, frequently used to trim fitted princess-style coats, is just as much at home on the loose, boxy coat made of smooth.surfaced fabric (velvet, velveteen or broadcloth). This one, also from Block's, is velvety-smooth broadeloth. The coat ($149.95) has tapered melon gleeves held in by ermine cuffs fastened with single broadcloth buttons. The small ermine-collar rises above a tucked yoke effect. Dress and coat make the type costume which will be seen frequently at symphony concerts this coming season. “Opening dates for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra are Nov. 12 and 13. The orchestra's maintenance fund will be boosted by proceeds from

a pair of fashion teas at Block's next week, Sept. 21 and 22. . |
