Mad Bid Made Good ‘When Luck Teams With Opponents’ Error

South Squeezes Out || Tricks for Game As West Takes Long Chance and Fails

By EASLEY BLACKWOOD “HOW LUCKY can you get,” said West bitterly when)

South squeezed out 11 tricks for game on this hand. South] was lucky. He bid like a madman to reach his five diamond

contract and he should have heen down one. But it was West him-| self who could have made certain of the set, Here's what happened. West opened the queen of spades which held. He continued with the six of spades, the nine went on from dummy and South ruffed out East's king. South cashed the ace of diamonds and led to dummy's king. Then he led a low heart and finessed his queen, West winning with the King. West came out with the eight of spades, dummy played the 10, East the ace, and again South ruffed. Now declarer cashed the ace of hearts and led a small club, succéssfully finessing dummy’s jack. He played dummy’s jack of hearts, discarded a small club from his own hand. Then he entered nis hand with a trump and laid down| his last trump ™ YE

partner, “May 1 go out, partner?” It is always your privilege to ask this question in

your turn before making any meld. You do not have to ask. You may, if you wish, just go out. But if you do ask, you are bound by your partnei’s ‘reply. If he says “Yes,” you must go out. And if you are unable to go out, your side must .pay a 100point penalty. If your part-

comes vour turn, you. again _ are priv leg ed either to RO out

without asking your ‘partner, or, before .drawing, once again you may ask your partner, “May I go out, partner?” You are again bound by his reply. If a player takes the pack by selecting the up-card, he cannot ask for permisison to meld out, beciuse he is required to place two cards from his hand on the table to form a meld with the up-card. If a player asks before drawing if he may meld out and partner says “No,” he may then either.draw a card from the stockpile or take the pack or discard pile. When a player melds out, play ends and the deal is scored in acc ordance with the scoring table, TOMORROW: “Going out” and special rules,
