Britain Went to War 10 Years Ago Today
Big Ben Struck 11... There Was | Little Drama but a Great Deal of Dignity
By WILLIAM H. STONEMAN, Times Foreign Sorrsapwadtent , LONDON, Sept. 3—Ten crowded years ago this morning as Big Ben struck 11 and people sauntered | . along Whitehall through the sunshine of a perfect | autumn “day, Britain went to war again. . She did so deliberately of her.own choice and with plenty of forethought. She was aware of the risks, If anything she was prepared for a lot more than she
actually got. When you walk down Whitehall today it seems like | yesterday that it all happened. The place and the people look remarkably much as they did a decade ago. Then when you think of all the missing faces, it seems a century has passed. . . . . . ~ THERE WAS very little drama but a great deal of | dignity and nobility to the occasion. . As we stood in front of No. 10 Downing St. and the big clock sounded the hour, all of us who had lived through Munich one year before had a great sense of relief, Everybody. had. known for years that an operation had to be performed to rid the world of Hitler and the British | knew they had been elected to do the job. So there was a - great feeling of “Let's get the darned thing over with.” This mixed feeling of spiritual elation apd fatalism gave way to good old fashioned fright as air-raid sirens sounded a - false alarm to let people know the war was on. : ’ . wu * = =» WE STOOD petrified watching the eastern sky for an armada of German bombers. All of the alarmists plus a good many sensible people. had said they would pulverize the city | within the first hour of any war. Col. Charles A. Lindbergh and an American diplomat who has suffered énough already had spread the impression that Germany had a frontline air force of 50,000 ships. Plans had been made jo. deal with 100,000 casualties in - London alone during the first week of war and warefouses were crammed with papier mache coffins, We didn't know then that the Germans wouldn't really attack London until Sept. 7, 1940.. Casualties in London from bombs, buzz-bombs and rockets during the five years and nine ! months of war totaled 80,387. | x = : } "= = | 80 TODAY as you walk down Whitehall you feel a little foolish in retrospect but maybe not too foolish after all ! You are certainly grateful to see so much of the place still | standing.” | Britain went into the war knowing that she was alone exi cept for the Dominions and a reluctant France which had con_sented ‘to fight following Germany's invasion of Poland on Sept. 1, She was sure of moral support from the United States but was equally sure of treachery and opposition from the Soviet | Union. which on Aug. 23 had signed a non- -aggression treaty with Nazi Germany. No matter how often they say it-didn’t happen or that it was justified or smart, the fact remains that the Soviet Union, captained by the same gentlemen who run it today, made war possible in in 1939 by agreeing to split Poland with Germany.
