WATCH GOLDFINCHES GATHER THISTEEDOWN--During the month of August those of you who like to take walks afield stould watch for the Goldfinches. Commonly called “Wild Canaries” they are found from ocean to ocean, and their pure lemon yellow and black color makes them easily identified. These cheery little birds sing whether in flight or resting. during most of the. summer, One of the unusual things about the Goldfinches is that they wait until August to start gathering nesting materials. It seems that when the brownish female builds her nest she is very particular as she wants only the best mattress for her babies. To make the nest as soft as possible she pads ft with thistiedown held together with the finest of grasses and bark shreds. Rol 4 . Thistle plants which are covered with hundreds of prickles do not generally mature their downy heads until August, so the Goldfinches seem to go merrily about their seed eating until the thistle~ down is ready. See if you can find a pair of Gold finches doing their August nest building. TOMORROW —Hang Tag for Young Acrobats.
