Masters paused to plah his play. By winning the first trick = and leading diamonds he could have ended up taking 10 tricks. Mrs. Keen would have won the first or second diamond lead with her ace. She would continue clubs. But when Miss Brash got in with ace of hearts, she woald not have 4 club to return. : %
Eliminates Guess But, on winning the first trick, how would Mr. Masters know whether to start diamond or
the same length and high card strength, If he happened to lead hearts at trick two, Miss Brash would: win while she stil had a + club to lead - and while her partner stil had the ace of diamonds for an entry. The answer is that Mr. Mas‘ters would have no way of knowing which red suit should be led first. It was a 50-50 guess. And Mr. Masters doesn’t like guesses. ‘He always tries for something more definite to go on. "So he ducked the first trick. He figured if the clubs were divided 4-3 between the opponents’ hands he would lose only two club tricks and the red aces. If Mrs. Keen had five clubs and both red aces, “the hand very probably couldn't be made. But if the red aces were divided, then ducking the first club lead would cut the enemy's communications. . Mr. Masters had to take the second club lead and he came out with the king of hearts. Miss ‘Brash won with the ace but had no club to return. So Mr. Masters ‘made four no trump after all ‘ Another triumph for the hold-up , play.

By JEAN TABBERT THE good-better-best formu1a is a practical one to follow when the bride-to-be chooses her table linen and her bath towels. Plastic rates high as far as the informal table variety is concerned. Most popular of the. individual plastic place mats is the “lace” type, all-white. Sturdy, they are easily cleaned, won't stain. When a future homemaker acquires this sort, she can match it with any color accessories she wishes. Another time-saver is the plastic tablecloth, These, too, are most desirable in all-white, sales indicate. The one shown

Separate napkins are a boon to ' the beginning housewife, They'll’ rescue an odd cloth from obscurity, fill in if a china and linen pattern haven't yet been selected. 8 » » AT WASSON'’S they come in a number of patterns. Seven-teen-inch . squares, they are made in solid colors—brown, chartreuse and other decorator shades, Others, made of combed cotton and spun rayon, are hand-blocked, white and come with a wide border available in almost any color of the rainbow.
YOUR MANNERS—

in the bath towel color race. However, colored borders on all-white continue to be populary and white often is chosen for the eviryday variety. Sophisticated bathroom color schemes are increasing, trend proves, and the towel firms are keeping pace with the move. Cannon, for instance, brought out a new shade »— bittersweet-—recently, and Cal loway a silver leaf pattern in flamingo. The two companies, along with the Martex firm, show these high-fashio= colers in bath, hand and guest towel size with matching wash cloths. Bath mats don't come in all the towel shades, but their 11 colors will match or contrast with each of them. Shown (bottom) is a chartreuse towel with an all-over orchid pattern; a grey with neat self-stripe, and a bath towel, hand towel and wash cloth with a wine stripe on a whife ground.
