Petition Charges Race Prejudice
The city legal department today was studying a petition demanding the suspension of three policemen accused of race prejudice. The petition, presented to the Board of Safety by four prominent Indianapolis Negroes, was turned over to the legal unit for analysis. The policeemn are accused of ithe arrest without charge of the four persons early May 1 as they were parked in their automobile in Northwestern Ave. The petition charges the arrests were made because the policemen were under the impression two women in the car were white. The four arrested were Dr. Lu|clen B. Merriweather, local dentist and former city councilman; Miss Emily Stuart, public school teacher; Mercer M, Mance, attorney and Juvenile Court referee, and Miss Kathalyn Stuart, social worker and former employee of the State Welfare Department.
