‘McKinney Engineers Deal to Plug Tribe's Gap qt Third Base
Team Loses Third in Row as Minneapolis
Routs Muir, Goes On
By EDDIE ASH,
Having lost three in a row and five in their last seven starts, the Indianapolis Indians’ management got on the beam today and completed a new player deal that figures to plug a weak spot on
the infield at third base.
Vice President Frank E. McKinney, who also is president of the Pirates, returned from a brief stay in Pittsburgh, threw his
weight around and came up| with Froilan (Nanny) Fernandez.
The 30-year-old Fernandez, in-|
fielder-outfielder, was obtained in|
a trade with the league-leading| tion in total base hits with 183. St. Paul Saints, and in the ex-!
change of players Infielder Grady Wilson and Pitcher Edson Bahr were turned over to the Apostles. Hit 28 Homers On paper, it fooks like a great deal for Indianapolis. Last year, with Milwaukee, Fernandez batted © .318, batted in 124 runs, collected | » ” o

An infielder by trade, at short or third, Fernandez was shifted to the outfield by the Milwaukee! {Brewers last season and the {Saints also have been using him {in the pasture, But Tribe Manager 1 Lopez thinks “Nanny” will do, e Indians the most good on the inner works. Fernandez played the short field! regularly in the Coast League and| part time with the Boston Braves, He was with the Braves in 1946 and 1947.
Three Years in Serv ice
He ig a Californian of Spanish _ descent, stands 5 feet 9 inches and weighs 172 pounds. Although Fernandez, who spent three years In service, has not! been hitting up to his 1948 pace, this spring, Manager Lopez is! elated over the deal and believes that the veteran will recapture his stride with the Indians.
Grady Wilson, who has been used sparingly ‘by the Redskins this spring is batting .358, but his defensive play at third base has been under triple-A caliber. Edson Bahr, relief pitcher, has three defeats against him with no victories. The guess is that Pittsburgh and Brooklyn negotiated a fiveplayer swap. Johnny Hopp, infielder, from Pirates to Dodgers, for outfielder Marv Rackley, and Indianapolis’ Wilson and Bahr to Bt. Paul for Fernandez. The Saints are a Brooklyn farm, similar to the Indianapolis-Pitts-burgh affiliation. Bob Malloy, hurler recently returned here by the 8t. Louis Browns, has been placed on the Tribe's active player list, and is expected to sign his contract tonight. . Mound Staff Next
Tribe Vice President McKinney sald he is not through making deals and promised that in the near future some changes will be made in the mound staff. McKinney sald, “I am watching all major league waiver lists and the Pittsburgh and Indianapolis scouts have been alerted to be on
